It has been a while since I have last posted. It is because October was a crazy month! There were a lot of exciting projects taking place. With school and work, there were many sleepless nights. Anyways, I wanted to tell you guys about two of the major projects I worked on this past month. First, I helped to put together a Sex Week.
To begin, Sex Week is a week of events where inclusive sex education is taught. This is only our second time doing a sex week at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Last year, we held our first sex week through the club Student Activists for Equality (SAFE). It was a success, so we decided to do it again this year. We were sponsored through Women’s Action Collective (WAC). Both years, we self raised the money to fund these sex weeks through button selling. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s campus was super supportive and helped us raise a lot of money for this program to be great. Below, I included two photos of some of the buttons we sold. These buttons were all handmade by students.
I am sure you are wondering what kind of events were scheduled for a week of sex education. We centered this week around National Coming Out Day. We built the classes on topics that we thought were important or overlooked. For each, we wanted to have two events per day. During mid-day, we would have our more educational, sit down classes. In the afternoons, we held our events that were educational, but more involved for the audience. Here is a picture of all the events we held this year.
As treasurer of the Women’s Action Collective, I was in charge of keeping up with the money. As I said before, we sold handmade buttons to fund this week. We sold the buttons a week before and during all the events. It was incredible to see everyone purchase and wear our buttons around campus! I think the buttons were a way to bring the campus together. Now, I see buttons on people’s backpacks everywhere. With the help of the people involved and the money we raised, we were able to make it bigger and better than the previous year. The turnout to the events were amazing. Everyone was excited and willing to contribute at each and every event. It was remarkable to see all people from different backgrounds come together for a great cause.
I am honored to be on the founding team for Sex Week at UTC. Also, I enjoyed working with so many amazing people.
