Favorite Music Covers from 2017
Over time, the internet has brought us many incredible things. One of my favorite things is YouTube. I think YouTube is a great place for anyone and everyone to express anything they want to. As a result, there are many amazing things that have come from the platform. One of those things is music covers.
I listen to a lot of music covers. I have a sweet spot for mashups. I am definitely one of those people that like to listen to songs on repeat. 2017 was an amazing year for music! I feel like a lot of great music was released all around. Artists really brought the fire as well as the Youtube artists that covered the songs. I wanted to share some of my favorite YouTube covers from 2017. (These are not in any particular order.)
1. Fetish – Kurt Hugo Schneider and Kina Grannis
I love the simplicity of this song. I think Kina’s voice is perfect for the cover. The decision to pair it with the saxophone was genius. I love how the song is a conversation between the saxophone and Kina. It makes for an interesting take on the song.
2. One Last Time – Kurt Hugo Schneider, Vincent, Mario Jose, and Aaron Encinas
I love the original version of this song a lot. This version is a close second to the original. The idea to slow the song down and add more emotions give this song a new perspective. I think the three of them together harmonize perfectly. One of the best moments from the song is during the bridge section, because they are so in sync with each other.
3. Stay – Us the Duo
I love a good mashup. I like how subtle they chose to do it. One of their best abilities is being able to make a song simple, but complex. I think they do that in this mashup. The way they use Stay with Me to accent Stay is stunning. They sound amazing as always.
4. Havana, Mi Gente, and Hips Don’t Lie Mashup – Alex Aiono and Diamond White
This is one of those covers that was consistently on repeat. I love the vibe of this mashup! They performed and harmonized together perfectly. To be honest, it felt like they had a lot of fun making the video. The fact that they used this video to spread awareness and make donations for Puerto Rico is amazing too.
5. Friends and Unforgettable Mashup – Alex Aiono
This mashup has the calmest vibe. I love the simplicity of this mashup. It helps to focus more on the vocals and lyrics. The two songs worked well together. The transitions were very smooth. I like the octave he chose for this song. It sounds amazing!
6. Evolution of Lady Gaga – Superfruit
I love their evolution of series. There is not a single one that I have not loved. I love this one, because who can not appreciate Lady Gaga. Also, I like the route they took with it. They always keep the instrumentation simple and let their voices do all the work. It always pays off. I do not know how they decide, but they always sing the best parts for their voices.
7. 4 for 90s and 4 for 2000s – Todrick Hall
I am obsessed with the 4 series. It is the most brilliant thing ever! From the outfits to the dancing, everything about these videos are amazing. What I love most about these videos is how many different songs and genres he includes into the mashup. Also, his ability to subtly add even more songs in the background is incredible. He has the best energy. His vocals are stunning. I love the harmonization. He is so talented!
8. New Rules x Burn x Bodak Yellow Mashup – William Singe
I love his vibe so much. Once again, I love the simplicity. His voice is so amazing that he does not need anything extra in the background. I think he did a great job deciding on these songs to put together. The transitions are smooth. His voice is on a whole other level as usual.
9. Redbone – William Singe and Alex Aiono
I love that they are best friends. I feel like they bring the best out of each other. I have been loving all of their collaborations. My favorite from last year was Redbone. It was so simple. I could feel how into the song they were. Their vocals and energy were great. It felt like they were genuinely having a great time. It seemed like they did not do a lot of planning and just let themselves improv. It was incredible!
10. Dancing On My Own – Pentatonix
I like the different direction they took with this cover. I think they all sounded and played great! I really enjoyed the harmonization and chords throughout the song. I though the addition of the cello was a great idea.
11. Passionfruit – Leroy Sanchez and Will Gittens
This is my favorite Passionfruit cover. Their attention to detail was amazing to see throughout. I think just having the guitar allowed for them to have more freedom with vocals. The vocals throughout this song are incredible! I can tell they took risks and sang the song exactly like they wanted to. The harmonization and the addition of emotion is perfect throughout. I love the vocal improv.
12. The Cure – Sam Tsui
There is nothing better than vocals and a piano. The simplicity of this cover is amazing. Most interestingly, I like the simplicity he took in the vocals. This is one of those covers that I love to sing with. I think his vocals make it easy to harmonize with. Also, I thought it was amazing that he decidated the video to the victims of the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. You can feel the emotion throughout the song.
Here are some of the covers that I have enjoyed this past year. There was so much incredible music this past year. I am ready to see what artists are bringing in 2018.
Thanks so much for reading my post! I hope you have a wonderful day!
